Route to the Sahara Desert: From Marrakech to Fez in 4 Days
Join us on an unforgettable journey to the heart of the Moroccan desert, where the dunes hold ancient stories, the kasbahs tell tales of the past, and nature offers landscapes that change with every mile.
Day 1: Marrakech–High Atlas–Ait Ben Haddou–Ouarzazate–Dades Gorges
Pickup from your riad or hotel in Marrakech and departure for southern Morocco.
We’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest point in the range accessible by road, with stops to enjoy its breathtaking panoramic views.
We will visit the famous Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village built of rammed earth and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the setting for films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and numerous historical productions.
Lunch on your own in the area, followed by a drive to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert and the “Hollywood of Morocco.” We’ll continue through the Skoura Valley and the Valley of Roses until we reach the Dades Gorges.
Reception with welcome tea, dinner, and overnight stay at a hotel in the Dades Gorges.
Day 2: Dades–Todra Gorge–Tafilalt Palm Grove–Merzouga (Erg Chebbi Desert)
After breakfast, we’ll head to the spectacular Todra Valley. We’ll make stops to take in the views and go for a hike through its impressive canyon, surrounded by rock walls and palm groves.
Lunch on your own in Tinjdad, then continue to Merzouga, deep in the Erg Chebbi Desert. Before arriving, we’ll cross the Tafilalt palm grove, visit small traditional villages, and stop at a fossil factory, where we’ll learn about the desert’s geological discoveries.
Arrival in Merzouga.
Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in the desert.
Day 3: Erg Chebbi Desert – Adventure and Berber Culture
After breakfast, we’ll set out on a 4×4 excursion through the Merzouga Desert. We’ll visit the Merzouga oasis and walk through the ancient lands of the first nomads who founded the villages of Merzouga and Hassilabied.
We’ll visit Berber nomadic families, where we’ll share tea under authentic tents and learn about their history, traditions, and way of life in this landscape of dunes and desert mountains.
At noon, we’ll arrive in Khamlia, a village located 7 km from Merzouga, famous for its Gnawa population, of sub-Saharan origin.
We’ll enjoy a live performance of their traditional music and dances.
We’ll have a traditional lunch featuring Berber pizza and then return to the hotel to rest.
In the afternoon, one of the most iconic experiences of the trip will begin: a camel excursion through the dunes of Erg Chebbi, guided by an expert nomad. We will climb the great dune to watch the sunset before venturing into the heart of the desert.
Dinner and overnight stay in a desert camp, under a unique starry sky and in complete silence.
Day 4: Desert–Ziz Valley–Midelt–Azrou–Ifrane–Fez
We’ll wake up early to enjoy an unforgettable sunrise in the Sahara Desert, from the top of the great dune—the highest in Morocco.
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Fez. Along the way, we’ll stop at the spectacular Ziz Valley, in Midelt, in the cedar forests of Azrou, and in Ifrane, known as “Little Switzerland” for its architecture and natural surroundings.
Arrival in Fez in the late afternoon or early evening and transfer to your riad or hotel.
End of our trip together in Fez.
