Route to the Merzouga Desert from Fez
Travel beyond the familiar and discover the endless dunes of the Moroccan desert. An authentic experience that combines adventure, Berber culture, ancient history, and spectacular landscapes—perfect for those who want to explore the Sahara from Fez.
Day 1: Fez–Ifrane–Azrou–Ziz Valley–Merzouga (Erg Chebbi Desert)
Pickup from your riad or hotel in Fez and departure for the Erg Chebbi Desert.
We’ll cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through Ifrane, known as the “Little Switzerland of Morocco” for its Alpine architecture, urban layout, and natural surroundings. The cedar forests and local vegetation offer unique landscapes.
We’ll continue on to Azrou, famous for its crafts and Berber character. We’ll make scenic stops and have time for lunch on your own. Later, we’ll pass through Errachidia and Erfoud, key regions of southeastern Morocco.
Stop in the spectacular Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s most breathtaking landscapes, featuring the country’s largest palm grove stretching along the Ziz River between canyons and small traditional villages.
Arrival in the late afternoon or evening in Merzouga, in the heart of the Erg Chebbi Desert. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Merzouga.
Day 2: Erg Chebbi Desert – Adventure, Culture, and Nomads
After breakfast, we’ll set out on a 4×4 excursion through the Merzouga Desert. We’ll visit the Merzouga Oasis, walking among the ancient plots of land once occupied by the first nomads who founded the villages of Merzouga and Hassilabied, as well as other Berber settlements in the area.
We’ll visit Berber nomadic families, where we’ll share tea under authentic haimas and learn about their history, traditions, and way of life in this extreme environment of dunes and small mountains.
At noon, we’ll arrive at the village of Khamlia, located 7 km from Merzouga, known for its Gnawa population, of sub-Saharan origin. We will enjoy a live performance of their traditional music and dance, as well as a demonstration of their percussion instruments.
A traditional lunch featuring Berber pizza, followed by a return to the hotel to rest.
In the afternoon, one of the most iconic experiences of the trip will begin:
a camel excursion through the dunes of Erg Chebbi, guided by an expert nomad. We will climb the great dune to watch an unforgettable sunset before venturing into the heart of the desert.
Dinner and overnight stay in a luxury haima, under a unique starry sky and in the absolute silence of the Sahara.
Day 3: Desert–Erfoud–Errachidia–Midelt–Fez
We’ll wake up early to enjoy a sunrise in the Sahara Desert—one of the most magical moments of the trip—from the Great Dune, the highest in Morocco.
After breakfast and getting ready, we’ll return to the hotel and begin our journey back to Fez.
Along the way, we’ll stop in Erfoud, famous for its traditional date market, considered one of the most important in Africa. We’ll continue on to Errachidia and Midelt, passing through the mountainous landscapes and valleys of the Middle Atlas.
We’ll arrive in Fez in the late afternoon or early evening and transfer to your riad or hotel.
